Enjoy Pumpkins in the Park, then bring yours home and use these carving tips!
With Halloween just over a month away, your kids are probably getting excited about the costumes they’re seeing in your local stores. Rather than stifle their enthusiasm for a few weeks, why not take them to one of the best local events to show off their cool get-up?
The 9th annual Pumpkins in the Park will be held on Saturday, October 10th at Edith Rodaway Park. The event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and every child who comes in costume will get a free mini pumpkin! To fill the event with fun, there will be crafts, face painting, games, snacks including hot dogs and popcorn, and a puppet show at 11:30 a.m.
When you bring your pumpkins home from this exciting event, you can use these tips for carving to make the most of them.
- Create the hole in your pumpkin through which you’ll scoop out all the innards in the bottom, rather than the top. Not only does this keep your stem in tact, it also makes it easier for your pumpkin to sit level and you can simply lower your pumpkin over a light source rather than having to balance it inside!
- If you’re trying to get all of the goop out of your pumpkin, reach for an ice cream scoop. It’s sturdy handle and curved shape make it perfect for the job.
- Draw your design on your pumpkin with dry erase marker before you start carving. The marker will come right off if you make any mistakes!
- Dilute bleach in water in a spray bottle and spray your pumpkin with this mixture daily to keep mold at bay.
