Most Commonly Made and Broken New Year’s Resolutions

Most Commonly Made and Broken New Year's ResolutionsHow To Avoid Common Resolution Relapses

If you are like most humans, your list of New Year’s resolutions looks similar this year to those from previous years. You are not alone. Here is a short list of the most commonly made New Year’s Resolutions:

  1. Lose Weight
  2. Quit Smoking
  3. Eat More Healthfully
  4. Volunteer
  5. Manage Debt
  6. Travel
  7. Drink Less Alcohol

According to Time.com, those common resolutions are also those that are most commonly broken. So you can work towards sticking to your goals, we want to offer the following tips to keep your New Year’s resolutions.

  1. Get Real: First, think of New Year’s Day as a jumping off point rather than as a major break with your past self. The truth is January 1st is just another day and building it up too much in your mind can lead to disappointment down the road. While you are being honest with yourself, also appraise your resolutions. Are your goals realistic? Make sure you are not resolving to do something impossible.
  2. Get Company: Odds are someone in your close circle has similar resolutions. Seek out a friend or family member you trust who has a common goal, and commit to holding each other accountable.
  3. Get Excited: To keep yourself motivated through the year, make sure that you celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Did you work out every day this week? Treat yourself to a movie! (Just make sure your rewards do not counteract your resolutions. A whole pizza is not a good reward for eating healthy this month!)
